Improving Professional Capacities for Palliative Care

The Center for Palliative Education at the Northwest AETC in Seattle, Washington, has recently completed a curriculum and teaching resource for medical educators on the delivery of palliative care for people with HIV/AIDS. The curriculum provides an overview and specific modules in five areas: advance care planning, communication, culture, pain and symptom management, and psychosocial issues. The HRSA (2003) clinical guide also provides detailed information on clinical, psychosocial, ethical, and legal issues related to the acquisition or delivery of palliative care services.

Information on the Center for Palliative Education’s curriculum is available online from the University of Washington (http://depts.washington.edu/pallcare/training/index.shtml) or from the AETC National Resource Center (http://aids-etc.org/). Regional AETCs also provide direct training to CARE Act local providers.
